About Our Tin Plating

tin platingKeystone Corporation’s tin plating offers excellent solderability and ductility and a long solderability shelf life. Tin plating is a great choice for not easily soldered substrates, as it enhances the materials' solderability. Additionally, tin is a material that is not easily oxidized by air,  has good conductivity and is corrosion resistant. It is also generally considered non-toxic and non-carcinogenic and approved for food contact applications.

Keystone offers both matte and bright tin electroplate for Rack and Barrel applications.

Bright Tin Plating

Parts plated with bright tin have a shiny, aesthetically pleasing surface finish with a high luster. Bright tin also provides a lower coefficient of friction for mating with other parts, circuit boards and connectors than matte tin.

Bright tin also has a smaller grain size than matte tin (1-9 um diameter for matte versus the sub-micron range of 0.1 um for bright). The smaller grain size presents a more uniform surface for reflecting light, creating a shiny appearance.

Matte or Solderable Tin Plating

Matte deposits are free of co-deposited brighteners found in bright tin plating. Matte tin will also retain its original color under high temperatures.

Matte tin-plated parts are better suited for solder reflow processes and suffer less stress from elevated temperatures. Matte tin plating best suits lead-free reflow solder processes with higher temperatures, typically 250C—260C.
