About Our Tin Plating

Keystone Corporation’s tin plating offers excellent solderability and ductility, as well as a long solderability shelf life. Additionally, tin is a material that is not easily oxidized by air, has good conductivity, and is corrosion resistant. It is also generally considered to be non-toxic and non-carcinogenic and is approved for food contact applications.

Keystone Corporation offers both matte and bright tin electroplate for Rack and Barrel applications.

Bright Tin Characteristics

Parts finished with bright tin have a shiny, aesthetically pleasing surface finish with a high degree of luster. Bright tin also provides a lower coefficient of friction for mating with other parts, circuit boards and connectors as compared to matte tin.

Additionally, bright tin has a smaller grain size than matte tin (1-9 um diameter for matte versus the sub-micron range of 0.1 um for bright). The smaller grain size presents a more uniform surface for reflecting light, creating a shiny appearance.

Matte (Solderable) Tin Characteristics

Matte deposits are free of co-deposited brighteners found in bright tin plating. Matte tin will also retain its original color under high temperatures.

Matte tin plated parts are better suited for solder reflow processes and suffer less stress effects from elevated temperatures. Matte tin plating is best suited for lead-free reflow
solder processes that have higher temperatures, typically in the range of 250C – 260C.
